TAMSIN JOHANNA

artist statement:

My work, by life’s coincidences has become mainly textile and print-based: two mediums whose combined histories of hobby, craft and industry has proved a perfect medium to explore questions of labour, knowledge, queerness, body and gender.

I believe art should be accessible and approachable for all humans, a belief which leads me to honour the ordinary and have a deep appreciation for craft: the practicality and community that can be found through making.

Craft values being in process—both the process of creating objects and the process of creating ourselves through the words, images, actions, feelings, knowledge, sounds and memories we live, make and share.

All my making is a practice of process, a coming together of body, mind, experience and environment in a worldly, muddling, mediating, making: as much about object as it is about moments in movement.

Tamsin is an interdisciplinary artist living in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Tamsin has an advanced diploma in textiles from Sheridan College’s School of Craft and Design in Oakville, Ontario, a BFA with focus on printmaking and art history from NSCAD University in Halifax, and an MA in Women and Gender Studies from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax. They currently work as the interim fashion technician at NSCAD University.
